Saudi Arabia’s Lithium Push and Global Energy Ambitions
Global demand for lithium — the key mineral in electric vehicle (EV) batteries — has tripled in the last five years. This surge has created an urgent need for new supply sources, and Saudi Arabia is stepping forward as one of the most ambitious players in this new energy race.
As part of its Vision 2030 diversification plan, the Kingdom is transforming its mining strategy to focus on battery minerals, with a particular emphasis on lithium production and processing. The goal is clear: to secure a strong position in the global EV and renewable energy supply chains.
Saudi Arabia’s mineral reserves are estimated at over $2.5 trillion, and the government has committed $25–$30 billion by 2024 to strengthen its battery mineral supply chains. This investment aims to make the country a regional hub for critical minerals while reducing its reliance on hydrocarbons.
One of the most notable initiatives is the joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Ma’aden, which plans to begin commercial lithium production by 2027. Once operational, this project is expected to support 500,000 EV batteries and contribute to generating 110 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2030 — a milestone that aligns perfectly with Saudi Arabia’s clean energy and industrial goals.
Technology, Research, and the Future of Mining
Saudi Arabia is not only investing in extraction capacity but also in technological innovation. The country is adopting Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technologies — an advanced method that enables faster, more efficient, and environmentally friendly lithium processing.
Unlike traditional mining techniques, DLE minimizes water use and reduces environmental impact, making it a key component of the Kingdom’s commitment to sustainable industrial development.
Collaboration with research institutions such as King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) further strengthens this technological edge. KAUST’s work in material sciences and extraction innovation plays a vital role in improving lithium yield and purity — essential for ensuring the reliability of the EV battery supply chain.
Through these combined efforts, Saudi Arabia aims to become the first Middle Eastern nation with an established lithium processing capacity pipeline. This strategic advantage positions the Kingdom as a critical link between global EV manufacturers and renewable energy developers seeking secure, long-term battery material sources.
